Bird watching day hailed a success

A BIRD watching day was hailed a success at Avon Heath Country Park.

The centre, off the A31 near Ringwood, hosted the RSPB’s Big Garden Bird Watch at the weekend.

Sarah Jane Buckle from the charity helped children identify birds in the park’s wildlife area from the wildlife viewing hide in the discovery centre, then challenged them to find as many different birds as she spotted on a short walk.

The youngsters spotted 17 species including a treecreeper and greater spotted woodpecker.

Families built blue tit/great tit/robin boxes to take home.

Assistant ranger Carol Dawkins said: “All the children who made the boxes were very proud of their achievements.

“It’s the perfect time to put up boxes at present as birds are already starting to look for nesting sites for the spring – Sarah spotted a pair of blue tits checking out a birdbox on the park on her walk.”
